God's Math: A Cabinet Inspired by Mathematical Phenomena

Designer Michael Potter draws inspiration from these mathematical wonders to create a truly unique and captivating piece of furniture - God's Math.

Inspired by the writings of Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa in his book Liber Abaci, God's Math explores the concept of repeating order in our universe. The design incorporates the Fibonacci Spiral, a mathematical sequence that appears in various natural forms, as its central element. Surrounding the spiral are references to the golden ratio and the divine circle, both of which have fascinated some of the greatest minds in history.

What sets God's Math apart is its successful integration of these mathematical phenomena into a functional and visually stunning cabinet. The Fibonacci Spiral serves as the focal point, while the golden ratio and divine circle enhance the overall aesthetic appeal. The cabinet itself is fully functional, with two doors and three compartments, providing ample storage space.

Technically, God's Math required a combination of welding, woodworking, and advanced lamination techniques. The designer utilized rosewood, birdseye maple, and Cocobolo veneer laminates to ensure a sustainable design. Custom forms and creative veneering processes were employed to accommodate the scale and non-linear faces of the piece.

Measuring at 1219 mm in width, 508 mm in depth, and 1981 mm in height, God's Math is a statement piece that demands attention in any space. Its unique design and meticulous craftsmanship make it a true work of art.

Michael Potter embarked on the God's Math project in November 2019 in Greenville, SC, and completed it in April 2020. The cabinet is currently stored in the designer's studio, awaiting its rightful place in a discerning collector's home.

God's Math has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021.
